Author of many travel guides to North and South America, Carolyn McCarthy specializes in adventure, culture and the environment. Skilled at tough travel, she has explored the Amazon Basin via dugout canoe and solo hiked Patagonia to write Lonely Planet's Trekking in the Patagonian Andes. Other titles include guides to Argentina, Chile, Panama, Southwest USA, USA, Central and South America. She has also contributed to the Lonely Planet National Parks guides to Yellowstone & Grand Tetons and Bryce & Zion, as well as Lonely Planet's Best in Travel series.
Her work also appears in National Geographic, the Boston Globe, the Daily Telegraph, Outside and other publications. A former Fulbright fellow and Banff Mountain Culture grantee, she currently writes a travel column for Patagon Journal.
